Mary A. Petrovic advises clients regarding employee benefits, helping them remain in compliance with ERISA and the IRC. While she has a strong background in single and multiemployer defined benefit plans, she works extensively in employee benefits, federal tax, and legislative matters. Before joining Morgan Lewis, Mary served in the Office of the General Counsel at the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. (PBGC). While at PBGC, she was detailed to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means to work on significant retirement legislation.
Mary acted as counsel to the Chairman and Members of the Committee on Ways and Means on retirement security issues. She worked closely with stakeholders on the SECURE Act of 2019 and the Special Financial Assistance (SFA) Program within the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. Mary also worked on the implementation of the SFA Program, helping to draft the regulation that sets forth the requirements for SFA applications and related restrictions and conditions.
While at PBGC, Mary provided legal advice in connection with multiemployer pension plan transactions, partitions, alternative withdrawal liability rules, mergers and transfers, insolvencies, and other issues. In addition to her multiemployer pension plan work, she represented PBGC in civil actions and bankruptcies in federal courts across the country.
Before joining PBGC, Mary worked as a legislative assistant and press secretary for Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II, of Missouri.
