James R. Preston counsels clients on a wide variety of corporate law matters, focusing on venture capital investments, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and private equity matters for venture capital funds, corporate venture capital investors, private equity funds, and public and private companies. He represents entrepreneurs, startups, and other innovative high-growth companies at every stage of their business lifecycle. James advises clients across numerous industries, including the life sciences, healthcare, financial services, and technology sectors.
James received his J.D., magna cum laude, and an L.L.M. in law & entrepreneurship from Duke University School of Law. While in law school, James was a student attorney in the Start-Up Ventures and Community Enterprises Clinic, where he assisted local startup companies and nonprofit organizations. He was also a content editor for the Duke Law & Technology Review and served as treasurer for the Law & Entrepreneurship Society.
