The Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan adopted an order on 27 January 2025 abolishing the state regulation of gasoline prices by invalidating some orders of the Ministry of Energy issued between 2014 and 2024.
Deregulation is one of the steps taken by the Kazakh Ministry of Energy as part of the plan to gradually liberalize prices for fuels and lubricants, with the aim of closing the significant price gap with neighbouring countries and reducing the risk of illegal exports.
In 2014, state regulation of prices was introduced for some petroleum products, including AI-80, AI-92 and AI-93 gasoline. Retail prices for diesel fuel have been regulated only in the summers and off-seasons.
As of September 2015, only retail prices for AI-80 gasoline and diesel fuel were regulated; by July 2016, only retail prices for AI-80 gasoline were regulated.
In January 2022, state regulation of retail prices for AI-80, AI-92, AI-93 and AI-95 gasoline, as well as for diesel fuel in the summer and off-seasons, was established. The regulation remained in effect until 6 July 2022. Starting 14 July 2022, price regulation for retail sales was retained for all gasoline grades mentioned above, except AI-95.
As of 30 January 2025, Kazakhstan has abolished state regulation of retail prices for fuel. The Minister of Energy announced that the retail prices for fuel will go up in the near future.
