February 20, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC / SAN FRANCISCO, February 20, 2025: Strengthening its environmental and toxic tort litigation capabilities, Morgan Lewis is pleased to welcome Matthew Thurlow, resident in the firm’s Washington, DC and San Francisco offices. Previously serving as national co-chair of BakerHostetler’s environmental team, Matt will continue to advise a range of clients, including chemical and product manufacturers, retailers, oil and gas companies, and financial services companies, on environmental litigation and regulatory compliance obligations.

“As regulatory scrutiny intensifies and environmental litigation continues to expand, businesses across industries seek counsel backed by a strong understanding of evolving environmental policies and regulation, emerging legal trends, and their impacts on litigation risk,” said Firm Chair Jami McKeon. “Matt’s sophisticated and successful track record in state and federal courts across the country, including multidistrict litigation, strengthens our ability to provide comprehensive guidance to clients facing significant exposure in these areas.”

Matt represents clients in high-profile toxic tort and product liability litigation as well as environmental litigation brought under major federal environmental statutes, including the Clean Air Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, Clean Water Act, Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. In addition to his litigation practice, Matt advises companies on environmental regulatory compliance obligations, including under federal and state law related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in consumer products and environmental compliance obligations related to PFAS. Matt also served for three years as a trial attorney in the Environmental Enforcement Section of the US Department of Justice, acting as lead counsel on a variety of civil enforcement matters.

“Matt’s deep relationships with key industry players and his ability to advise clients at the intersection of litigation and regulatory compliance align seamlessly with our strategic approach and add strength to our toxic torts bench,” said Troy Brown, leader of the firm’s global litigation practice. “Further, Matt’s intimate understanding of legal issues related to PFAS and other emerging contaminants expands our capabilities in handling complex environmental litigation and will be a tremendous asset to clients at a time of growing oversight in this area.”

Over the past 12 months, Morgan Lewis has welcomed nearly two dozen partners to its global litigation team in a wide range of practice areas and concentrations, including white collar litigation and government investigations, securities enforcement, class action and product liability litigation, intellectual property, and financial services litigation. Recent additions include cybersecurity, incident response, and privacy partners Heather Egan and Hannah Levin; trial lawyers and former prosecutors Ashley Lynam and Jacob Sand; a five-partner West Coast intellectual property litigation team; insurance recovery litigator Emily Garrison in Chicago; antitrust and competition partner Paul Johnson in London; and a 54-lawyer, multi-practice team in Paris.
