Controversial Calif. AI Bill Could Have Indirect Impact on Telecom, Communications Daily

September 09, 2024

Communications Daily quoted partners Minna Lo Naranjo, Dion Bregman, and Andrew Gray, and associate Leigha Beckman in an article about a controversial California artificial intelligence (AI) bill that, while primarily aimed at regulating AI technologies, could have indirect consequences for the telecommunications industry.

The Morgan Lewis team advises companies to remain vigilant and prepare for potential ripple effects as AI regulations evolve, particularly in areas related to AI integration and usage, even though they don’t expect the proposed law to “have significant direct effects on or create liability for telecom companies given that the bill is targeted to large AI models.”

“It’s currently unclear how AI developers would ‘take into account’ the risk to critical infrastructures,” the lawyers said, adding, “but it’s possible that the telecom industry may need to interface with large AI models to ensure that there are possible protocols in place to properly identify disruption risks and ways to mitigate that risk.”
