The AmLaw Litigation Daily awarded a Morgan Lewis pro bono team a runner-up spot on its weekly list of Litigators of the Week for the successful efforts to prevent Mississippi from redrawing state legislative maps that would dilute the voting strength of Black Mississippians.
Morgan Lewis partners John Lavelle, Jeremy Esterkin, and Jaclyn Whittaker and associate Drew Cleary Jordan teamed up with lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), ACLU of Mississippi, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Mississippi Center for Justice, and the Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP to secure a decision forcing the state to redraw its 2022 state legislative maps in several areas.
After an eight-day trial, a panel of three federal judges found that the map violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and ordered the drawing of two additional Black-majority districts in the state Senate and one in the state House.
