Partner Rick Rothman is quoted in a Law360 article about a new law in California requiring companies making more than $1 billion in gross annual revenue to disclose their Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions. Rick noted that tracking Scope 3 emissions, which cover indirect emissions from supply chains, will likely prove the most difficult for companies because there is a lot of potential for omissions in tracking.
"I don't think that the sophistication of the mechanisms by which companies can estimate the Scope 3 emissions has developed to the point where it is feasible for them to get a reasonably accurate estimate," Rick said. "And I think that that's going to create a lot of consternation."
