Partner Liz Goldberg spoke to Pensions & Investments about the Department of Labor's Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) and its focus on missing participant enforcement actions. In 2021, the EBSA recovered more than $2.4 billion for direct payments to participants, plans, and beneficiaries, down from $3.1 billion last year—and roughly 80% of the money from this year’s enforcement actions was connected to missing participants. "Even though the overall number is down from last year, it still shows a trend over the past few years of very high numbers of reported enforcement recoveries relative to what we saw in the past," said Liz. "I think it continues to reflect a very robust enforcement program."
