Partner Cosimo Zavaglia spoke about the looming impacts of remote work at the Tax Executives Institute and San Jose State University’s High Tech Tax Institute annual conference, which was covered by Bloomberg Law. One potential effect of extended remote work could be an increase in audits by states applying withholding of taxes rules on companies to refill depleted public coffers, Cosimo said. States could also trigger new litigation over “convenience of employer” rules, he added, which determine how state nonresidents are taxed.
