Leonard Impagliazzo advises clients at the intersection of complex litigation, data, and emerging technology. His practice focuses on eDiscovery, internal investigations, information governance, and data privacy, with particular emphasis on large-scale disputes and investigations. He develops practical and defensible strategies for the preservation, collection, review, privilege analysis, and production of electronically stored information (ESI), helping clients manage legal risk, cost, and operational complexity.
Leonard has experience supporting intellectual property, product liability, toxic tort, commercial, and white collar matters in US federal and state courts. He also advises clients in the manufacturing, healthcare, pharmaceutical, software, social media, energy, and investment sectors on legal, technical, and strategic issues involving large and complex data populations.
A significant part of Leonard’s practice focuses on data preservation, litigation holds, spoliation, forensic remediation, and related discovery issues. He helps clients and litigation teams assess legal, factual, forensic, and practical considerations when preservation or collection issues arise and develops defensible strategies for remediation, discovery negotiations, and related litigation positions, including potential discovery sanctions. He also regularly drafts and negotiates ESI protocols, protective orders, privilege logging procedures, search methodologies, and other discovery processes designed to support defensible collection and preservation.
Leonard designs and implements technology-enabled review strategies using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), technology-assisted review (TAR), clustering, concept searching, and other advanced analytics. He has experience evaluating, implementing, and optimizing AI-assisted review workflows across high-volume litigation, investigations, and document reviews, including multidistrict litigation. His work includes developing methodologies to assess when GenAI-assisted review is appropriate for a matter, projecting efficiencies relative to traditional review, and integrating AI tools into defensible discovery workflows. He also develops layered review strategies that combine TAR, GenAI, and other advanced technologies to reduce manual review and identify new applications for AI reasoning, summarization, and citation capabilities. He advises clients and case teams on tool selection, workflow design, validation, defensibility, and the integration of emerging technologies into litigation and investigation strategy, with an emphasis on data minimization, accuracy, efficiency, and cost control.
Leonard leads discovery teams and coordinates lawyers, project managers, forensic professionals, vendors, and other technical resources across individual matters and portfolios of related litigation. Drawing on more than a decade of experience with high-volume and time-sensitive matters, he develops discovery strategies that account for litigation objectives, risk, budget, staffing, deadlines, technology, and client priorities.
Leonard is also an active contributor to the eDiscovery and legal technology community, regularly writing and speaking on the practical and legal implications of emerging technologies. His publications and presentations address topics including generative AI, eDiscovery case law, novel litigation and discovery challenges, internal investigations, privilege, mobile-device discovery, information governance, and evolving obligations associated with ESI. Leonard also maintains an active pro bono practice. He represented a Honduran woman and her minor son before the Philadelphia Immigration Court, securing withholding of removal under the Convention Against Torture.
