Matthew Ladd focuses his practice on regulatory investigations and enforcement, particularly on the banking and financial services industry. He has represented large banking and financial institutions in investigations and litigation, as well as clients across a range of industries, including healthcare, retail, and higher education. Matt’s experience includes defending clients in connection with government investigations by the US Department of Justice (DOJ), Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), and state regulatory and enforcement agencies, in addition to handling multi-district litigation and white-collar matters.
As a member of Morgan Lewis’s class action and consumer litigation and enforcement team, Matt draws on experience from several different practice areas to counsel clients in navigating enforcement activity from federal financial regulators and other government agencies. Matt has defended clients in government investigations and enforcement actions arising under the Securities Act, Exchange Act, and False Claims Act, among other federal statutes and state corollaries. He has counseled clients on a wide range of matters relating to banking and financial services, including joint CFPB/Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) investigations into credit card sales practices and the handling of prepaid debit cards, a DOJ investigation concerning digital payments, and a FINRA investigation of a broker/dealer concerning use of personal devices, as well as internal investigations by banks and lenders. Matt has also practiced extensively in the multi-district litigation (MDL) and class action space, representing clients in prominent multi-district litigations brought under the Controlled Substances Act.
