Alana Genderson advises clients on employment best practices and defends employers in all phases of employment litigation. Among other matters, Alana defends employers in whistleblower proceedings and against claims of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and wrongful discharge. Notably, Alana is the co-leader of the firm’s workplace health and safety practice, representing clients from initial investigations all the way through to trials and appeals. Alana is a Chambers-ranked OSHA practitioner and has been recognized by Law360 as one of five “Rising Stars” nationwide in the compliance practice area.
As part of her OSHA practice, Alana works closely with employers to develop and strengthen their safety and health compliance programs. Alana regularly visits client worksites to manage US Department of Labor (DOL), state plan, and public health department investigations. Alana has trained thousands of employers and managers on best practices for handling agency investigations. Alana also guides clients through the administrative rulemaking process. For example, she has submitted comments on newly proposed rules to agencies on behalf of dozens of trade organizations and has challenged DOL’s rulemaking authority in court on statutory and constitutional grounds.
Alana maintains an active crisis management practice. She has been one of the first phone calls clients make in the immediate aftermath of a workplace incident or in the days before headline news breaks. Much of Alana’s compliance work is “behind the scenes” with executive teams. Utilizing her crisis management skills, Alana previously served as a co-leader of the firm’s labor and employment COVID-19 response taskforce.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Alana participated in the firm’s Public Interest Fellowship Program, gaining litigation experience in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia with the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia. For years, Alana served as a co-chair for the DC Legal Aid Society Generous Associates Campaign and is an active supporter of the organization. Alana also proudly serves as a co-leader of the firm’s Parent Lawyer Network.
