Jeffrey G. Killian, Ph.D., helps businesses and inventors secure and enforce patent protection for their inventions. Jeffrey prepares patent applications, represents clients before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), provides intellectual property (IP) opinions and licensing advice, and supports due diligence projects. He has experience before the Patent and Trial Appeal Board (PTAB) in ex parte appeals and inter partes review (IPR) proceedings, and litigates IP cases in district court, at the International Trade Commission (ITC), and before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Jeffrey has more than two decades of global patent law experience and helps clients with global procurement and enforcement of patent portfolios, including in Europe and China. His clients include large corporations, universities, and startup companies across the full range of IP matters.
Jeffrey’s technical background and experience span a variety of technologies, including materials science; solid-state physics; organic conductors/semiconductors; batteries, charge storage devices, and electrochemistry; industrial processes and manufacturing technologies; medical devices; nuclear technologies; additive manufacturing; and nanotechnology. Jeffrey is a co-leader of the IP Defense Industry Working Group.
An author of many papers about polymer-based charge storage, Jeffrey is a named co-inventor on four US patents.
Jeffrey is an active participant in Morgan Lewis's pro bono program. He volunteers with various groups including the DC Bar’s Small Business Brief Advice Clinics (helping small businesses with business and IP-related legal questions) and Legal Counsel for the Elderly.
Prior to attending law school, Jeffrey obtained undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees in materials science and engineering. He also served as a nuclear-powered submarine officer in the United States Navy before earning his Ph.D. and J.D., where he gained practical knowledge on various electrical, mechanical, and nuclear systems technologies.
