Over the last few years, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has increased its narcotics enforcement efforts on healthcare providers—particularly on physicians prescribing large doses of controlled substances. While this has changed the willingness to prescribe scheduled narcotics, there remain several instances of diversion by healthcare providers and staff, especially in facility-based and post-acute care settings. In many hospitals, home health agencies, and hospices, instances of diversion by staff members—whether for illicit drug sales or personal use—are increasing.
Join us for this month’s Fast Break, the first of a two-part series on the DEA and controlled substances exploring DEA enforcement activity in healthcare.
