Satoru Matsuo is a partner in Morgan Lewis's Intellectual Property Practice. Mr. Matsuo focuses his practice on IP litigation and has experience in a broad range of technology licensing, patent litigation, and other intellectual property matters. His practice also includes complex business litigation, including product liability cases, as well as assisting Japanese clients with U.S. discovery. Mr. Matsuo has handled a variety of matters, including license negotiations with, among others, major U.S. and Korean semiconductor manufacturers; various patent and trade secret cases; and ITC Section 337 investigations. In addition, he has assisted clients with antitrust and compliance/government regulation investigations.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Mr. Matsuo was of counsel in the litigation and intellectual property groups of a large international law firm. Prior to that, he served as general counsel of Uniden Corporation for five years. As general counsel of Uniden Corporation, Mr. Matsuo was in charge of managing all of the company's legal work, including license negotiations and other contract, litigation, and patent matters related to telecommunications technology. Before joining Uniden, he was a member of the legal and intellectual property group of Fujitsu Limited for 13 years, handling patent license negotiations and IP litigation matters, including a successful defense against the Kilby patent.
Mr. Matsuo received his LL.M. from Columbia University Law School in 1989 and his LL.B. from Kyoto University, Japan in 1980.
Mr. Matsuo speaks and writes frequently on intellectual property topics. He was a contributor to Counseling for IP Licensing Agreements, a book published by Seirin-shoin in 2007, and is the Japanese translator for Intellectual Property (Arthur R. Miller and Michael H. Davis, West Nutshell Series), a book that was published by Bokutaku-sha in Japan in 1995.
Mr. Matsuo is admitted to practice in New York and is registered in Japan as a gaikokuho jimu bengoshi (registered foreign lawyer).
